Spearmint

Also known as peppermint, this perennial plant is the result of a cross between Mentha aquatica (water mint) and Mentha spicata (spearmint). It can reach 30 cm in height and up to 1 metre or over in diameter, and, in favourable growing conditions it can spread out of control. It is a plant with many medicinal applications and properties. It is very popular for soothing digestive problems, in skin treatments, for nausea, circulatory problems and various types of infection. For best results, only fresh, green leaves should be used. The fresh sensation which it provides is derived from the oil it contains. Very easy to propagate, it likes moist but well-drained soils. Peppermint is used in many varied products which we use in our everyday lives, for example toothpaste, chocolates, detergents, etc.
